Why Acupuncture?

Acupuncture as an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) is not the modern medical therapy. Why seeking Acupuncture/TCM treatment? According to TCM, the pain was caused by the stagnation of Qi(read as ‘chee’, the energy of life) in the body, that is, it lost balance of Yin and Yang. The acupuncture is aimed to stimulate the relevant meridian points to restore health by correcting the underlying imbalances. By balancing the body energetically, we empower the body’s own healing mechanism. Thus, acupuncture can achieve these medical benefits but not limited to: 1) reduced inflammation and then the pain, 2) Improved sleep and energy, 3) relieved the stress and nourished the mood.

Regular acupuncture may often use the help of the infrared light by warming the needling acupoints or specific area. It would enhance acupuncture therapy, such as healing the muscle injury, relieve the pain and soreness, etc.

There are few ways to stimulate the inserted acupuncture needles. Except for common finger twirling, the very typical stimulation for the inserted acupuncture needles is Electropuncture. It attaches a device that generates the pulses or waves to tap the clipped two needles in pair. It is incredibly useful to alleviate both sensory and affective inflammatory pain, and inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Other modalities like cupping, moxibustion and gua-sha are worth mentioning. For example, fire cupping, mainly worked for pain relief and detox, is often applied for alleviating back pain, can be also applied for conditions like anxiety, insomnia, or migraines. It’s also effective for reducing symptoms of the common cold, cough, and asthma.

Moxibustion is good to alleviate sports injuries and menstrual pain. It involved in burning the roll made from dried mugwort leaves (which its fresh ultimate extraction compound – artemisinin became the Nobel Prize winner and killer medicine for malaria.). By warming the acupoints and channels, the body’s own healing mechanisms are activated.

With Gua-sha, the acupuncturist uses a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape areas of your body where there is inflammation or stagnant qi to help improve circulation and promote healing. Gua-sha can help relieve the conditions such as musculoskeletal problems, especially tightness in the shoulders, legs and back. It can also help alleviate tension, headaches, migraines, neck pain or swelling in your body. Gua-sha can even help with anxiety, fatigue, insomnia and perimenopausal symptoms when done in addition to acupuncture.
Gua-sha has also been proven to help relieve tension in the face, reduce puffiness and inflammation, and it can even help reduce sinus pressure.
